What has the Bits program helped me with? Well let me tell you the Bits program has showed me that social networking sites have more to offer then just talking to your friends,posting pics and designing a page.Using sites like twitter you can add links of articles and other things that relate to a cause you stand for or the things you do for a group you belong to.The program also introduced me to blogging something I never done before in my life its new and different .I don't know if its something I'll keep doing I'm not much of a writer.I've done PowerPoint presentations before but doing a podcast was a new experience. Going inside a recording studio was pretty cool. I guess I'm still looking forward to hear how I sound. Going to a senior citizens home was an experience for the books I've never been so close to the elderly except with family members, but i have never presented anything to them before.

Portfolio training was pretty useful I learned a lot about what to do and what not to do at a job interview and Tommy was an okay guy, kind of funny also. Hazerena , I don't know if I spelled her name right, and Jamie were good mentors. I guess them not being that much older then us helped. Even though I think they stressed way to much over the presentation and getting to know the other students and making new friends was cool too.

When this program first began I didn't think I was gonna learn any thing that would actually help me in life but the truth is none of us did, an we didn't really like each other but, soon enough that all went away as time went by. As we got to know our mentors an they got to know us it got better. I would definitely recommend this program to anybody who wants to work in the business field as a career.

I can say that I learned the most in this program working with Tommy in portfolio training. When he first told us what we would be doing in the training it seemed all to easy, but once again I was wrong. I thought I knew everything there was to know about presenting myself at a interview till he showed us the proper ways of dressing, speaking, acting etc.We also had alot of fun within our group activities. I can honestly say this summer was a success

The B.I.T.S program

Hi my name is Malik and i am with the B.I.T.S program these last couple of weeks has been a new experience for me. Our group is based on emergency events. Its about Senior Citizens and the emergencies they face and also natural disasters. My group and I visited the senior citizens home. Basicly we told them how to evacuate in case of an emergency. Also this program has made me more confident. My group is the best I think we all get along, well some of us :) . We been doing some interesting stuff lately. We presented a powerpoint and we created a lot of blog entries.

Throughout the entire program, we have been discussing and learning every detail of each slide in the presentation. By doing so I've learned numerous things on being prepared and being an aide to a elderly person who is unable to evacuate indepentenly. Our trip to the nursing home was a great experience and gave me a sence of accomplishment. While doing so, I informed a handfull of senior citizens on the aspects of emergency preparedness and several steps of a evacuation process. There has been some great times during the program,and we have come a long way from where we started,belive me. We've become more conversational and shared lots of laughter but we all know all good things have to come to an end ... byee :)

The Times We Shared

The past six week in the B.I.T.S program have been a blast! It was learning experience for me because it was the first job i've ever had and it really taught me how to work with people from different backgrounds and beliefs than mine and it's taught me to be more open. My job here at B.I.T.S was to work with senior citizens and people with disabilities ,even though we only went to one senior home that was the highlight of this whole program for me because i love working with seniors. I am fortunate enough to still have my great grandmother as well as my grandmother living and i make sure i do everything i can to make them happy and comfortable so i am very compassionate towards seniors. There couldn't have been a better group for me than the emergency prepardness group because being able to help someone is my passion that's why my dream is to teach and i think my group members and I did a wonderful job presenting to the seniors the safest and most effective ways to evacuate a building during a disaster and informing them about the items that would be necessary for them to take with them in case they have to go to a shelter. If i had to re-do these six weeks over again i would not change a thing i enjoyed myself and my mentors were great they taught us that work doesn't have to be a boring and you don't have to follow the same routine, because everyday we were engaging in something new and exciting like making podcasts and blogging those all were new to me so the B.I.T.S program introduced alot of new technology to me and things i had know idea exsisted this was a the most exciting first job ever.

This Last Week

It's coming to an end.
This week we presented to the senior home. It went better than expected. You never know what you're going to get when you present anyway. The seniors were nice and down to earth and even talked to us a little. I thought it was great that we were able to share information with them that they needed to know. It was not like one of those things where you know you HAVE to present it no one needed to know the information or cared anyway. They really did need to know. We only presented the EV-AC powerpoint. We didn't get to present the presentation for emergency preparedness which they really needed to know. A lot of people do, not just seniors.

We had interviews for portfolio training also. I had a competition interview. Apparently the day was an "interview." We were being "watched" all day. That's how it is in reality though. You never know who's watching you. I've learned that before, don't remember who told me but the interview was very relevant to the real world. We had to present also. That was OK. It wasn't my favorite part of the day but it all tied in together.

All Good Things Must Come To A End!

Hi my name is Sharday! I have been a intern at the BITS Program for 6 weeks. The experience here has been a great one. My group the Emergency Preparedness has had great opportunities come our way over the course of the program. For example, we visited Yorktown Senior Citizen Home. That was an experience I will never forget. We meet with some of the senior citizens and presented our powerpoint to them. Our powerpoint consisted of things you will need and do in case of a disater occurs. A great sense of joy overcame me when I saw their smiling faces thanking us for not forgetting them. They were happy that people like myself showed a concern for them. We provided them with information and handouts to keep them updated with things thats occuring everyday.
All in all visiting Yorktown Senior Citizen Home has taught me to show concern for others. There are times in life when you feel all alone but you should always remember thats what friends are for. Im so glad I had the chance to experience such wonderful things this summer! I think everyone who helped me get to this point in my life. Thanks!

Preparing to present our powerpoint on emergency evacuation for the senior citizens was challenging. We had to practice and practice and practice. We had to make it conversational, exciting, and interesting to keep the seniors attention. On this passed tuesday we presented at Yorktown Arms which is the senior citizen home we visited. At first I wasn't that siked on presenting because im a very shy person and doesn't like to present. But with this experience now I have over came this fear of speaking in front of others. I also learned some things I did not know myself about emergency preparedness. I never made a plan or a kit which are most important incase a disaster striked Philadelphia. I don't have these things only because nothing really tragic ever happens here. When I began this program I never even thought of what I would need to survive if something tragic happened but now that this progam is over Im taking information with me that I didn't come with. -Suzette

Google maps has everything, however making your own map helps to focus on a specific theme for a certain area. Follow the Guide.

1. Must First have a Google account.
Go to Maps
Click on My Maps and Create New Map

2. Give Map a title and a description.
Type in address and then you must click on the map you created a marker comes up (blue) and drag over the one already there.
Then you can allow to Add info on the location.
Add YouTube videos and also pictures.

Here is an example of a map i previously made.
Note: This is just to guide you through the process, not necessarily step by step.

How Old Is Too Old to Drive?

This blog is on news cast i saw in Good Morning America, its about what its like for a senior citizen to drive. John Berman uses a simulator suit to demonstrate older drivers' problems.It shows younger people how it feels to be old and enable to drive correctly.They show them how hard it is to move when they in the car driving.Drivers 65 and older are 16% more likely to cause an accident than drivers age 25-64. Its hard for them to get in the car,and close the door.They also cant move their necks, arms, legs,and have back pains.They have trouble looking back when they are reversing.I think they shouldn't be driving at the age of 65 because they have problems moving around and its hard for them to break on time in case another car gets in the way and they gonna have problems with that and that is also going to cause an accident one day.However it is up to the individual and his or her family to discuss this issue and and decide whether or not the elders in their family should be driving.

Senior Driving

Today I read an article about the dangers of Seniors driving. In the article in states" Driving is a sign of independence and taking the wheel away from a person is like taking away their independence" but when Seniors taking the wheel not only causes harm to the community but to themselves then it is time to hand over the keys. In this article "When should an older adult surrender their keys" it lists signs that one should look out for when deciding if a loved one is still capable of driving once they reach a certain age. Some important things to watch out for when a Senior is continuing to drive is hearing loss, clarity of vision, reflexes how quickly are they able to respond in case of an emergency. New Experiences!

As the weeks continue I'm having fun experiencing new things! I have learned about natural disaters. For example, fires, flooding, power-outages, large-scale chemical spills and terrorist attacks. Also I have learned to prepare myself for such situations. My work group target people are senior citizens. We plan to conduct Emergency Preparedness workshops. These workshops will create an opportunity for seniors living in the Philadelphia senior housing developments to learn how to prepare themselves for natural and man-made emergencies. We also plan to provide important information for residence staff to help with their senior development preparedness plans. We have created two power points to present at these workshops. In the power points we have information that people of all ages can learn. As the weeks continue I will keep you updated. Thanks!

Leading Senior Issues ...

Affordable housing can be a challenge for anyone but for senior citizens it can be particularly tough to find housing that's affordable and meets their needs.The biggest problem for a large number of seniors is finding affordable housing though. About 30 percent of all older Americans pay more than they can truly afford for housing. Again, renters are hit the hardest with a growing number of seniors paying 50 percent of their income to housing needs alone. About 1 million seniors are living in homes which have needs for home repairs and modification that cannot be met due to cost. Seniors age 85 and older are in greatest need with about one-eighth in desperate need of repairs or modifications. With the 85 and older population identified as the fastest growing population in America now, this need will undoubtedly grow in the future.There can be few alternatives available for low-income seniors too. It can come down to choosing between not receiving any assistance at all or receiving nursing home care. Often times a person may live in a HUD-assisted senior housing project and need health care and other community services. However, a number of these residents may require a little bit more health care and may thrive better in an assisted living community. That option isn't always as easy to come by so instead of staying in their home these seniors may be forced into nursing homes, which is a much more expensive option.

Homeless Senior Citizens

Its a number of reasons why Senior citizens are homeless. These reasons are some of their family members does not care for them. A lot of seniors are in nursing homes. Some seniors hate nursing homes. People mistreat them. I see a large percent of senior citizens homeless, sleeping outside in the rain. We need to help these seniors. We can build more nursing homes. Make more fun activities for seniors. I am with B.I.T.S program and we've come up with a project to help.

Limits for Seniors

July 20, 2009....senior citizens, most of us have grandparents that think they can do any thing someone 30 years younger than them can do. People who are classified as Senior Citizens need to know there limits. For example, my group and i met a guy (who's name i wont reveal) got hit by a car crossing the street on his bike by a senior citizen. This women drove a whole block with out stopping even though his head was through the windshield....i wont tell any more of that story but, my point is senior citizens that know they don't have good eye sight shouldn't drive. I feel as though there should be a test, or some type of exam senior citizens should have to take before they do any task that could hurt them selves or any one else if isn't done correctly.

Entertaining Senior Citizens

Everyone needs entertainment, even senior citizens. No matter if they live with you or if they may be in a nursing or senior homes. Entertaining them is also a way to show that you care. If you volunteer you can have fun and also watch them have fun. What a fulfilling thing to do. If you want to give a little bit of your time to help an older person enjoy their day, make it a little brighter then entertain! Here are some things you can do.

Sing to Them
Seniors like music! You may find out that they like some of the music of today and you may like some of the music they like.

Dance for Them
Dancing is always entertaining! You can never go wrong with a little two step. LOL. They may even want to join you if they can so they can interact.

Play A Game
Play games that they may be able to play or would love to watch!

We all like to have fun. Some people just need a little help.

Discounts are the best!!!!!!!

It's great that senior citizens get discounts. Most of them don't have the money to get what they need to survive. I just read an article about how much discount senior citizens receive to help them get the things they need. I'm very happy that the seniors get to ride the bus for free. It's a great thing because they can't get to their destinations on foot and this gives them a sense of security to make it to their doctor appointments etc. At times I wish I was a senior citizens so I can get on the bus for free.

This economy is the worst to ever exist... What will people do when their grandparents have no place to go or no money to help them. The crazy thing is that the government is trying to pass a bill to take half the pay from welfare employees, if we can't pay welfare workers what they deserve than who will help pay for senior citizens. Maybe someone should start a fund for seniors to use as welfare because if we take away the only thing that seniors have to look forward to is welfare and without it what will happen to all our senior citizens????

This Week We edited our powerpoint and narrowed the information down to what we felt was most important and what we be the most helpful to the seniors. Then on Wednesday we had portfolio training with Tommy our instructor and we were spilt up into three groups and each group was assigned a book report and at the end of the session will we present our books that we research with one another. We also worked on some more team building activities to help us get more comfortable working together as a group. On Friday all of the groups involved in the program took a pyn assessment and we had a staff meeting with Kelly our boss and we discussed with her our goals and ideas for our project and last but not least it's PAY DAY and we are Super Excited!!!!!!

14th july we learned about our power point presentation called emergency preparedness which will be posted on our blog soon. We started creating our own power point. For lunch we went to look for job applications

Today we met Tommy and he showed us some mixed martial arts.

Okay we've been having so much fun! We've learned how to present ourselves for interviews during the portfolio training. We also been getting to know each other daily by playing games also known as "ice breakers." In the beginning it wasn't interesting but now we're more involved. Soon we'll be starting our project on "senior safety", which is researching different ways they can evacuate if a disaster struck. We'll be presenting our information to senior citizens through power points and poster boards.
